Teething is an important developmental milestone for children and generally begins around four to seven months. Common symptoms of teething include drooling, chewing, and sleep disruptions. While this is often a challenging time for both children and parents, there are several ways you can help alleviate the discomfort that comes with teething.

Teething Toys

As teeth push through, chewing can help to relieve pressure and reduce discomfort. Teething toys with textured surfaces consisting of silicone and BPA-free rubber are often very effective for infants. When searching for teething toys, it’s important to ensure they are large enough to not pose choking hazards.

Cold Compresses and Toys

As with most forms of inflammation and pain, cold temperatures can provide significant relief for teething babies. Chilled washcloths work well, as do refrigerated teething toys, which can be found easily. Make sure to avoid freezing temperatures as this can damage delicate gums

Massage the Gums

Massaging your baby’s gums with a clean finger or soft cloth can provide relief from teething discomfort. Massages provide counterpressure against the erupting teeth. Optionally, you can try using a silicone finger brush as well.

Over-the-Counter Remedies

If age-appropriate, over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be effective. However, it is crucial to consult your child’s pediatric dentist before using these medications. Avoid numbing gels such as benzocaine, per FDA guidelines.

Maintain Oral Hygiene

Even before teeth emerge, it’s important to keep your child’s gums clean and prioritize oral hygiene. You can start by wiping your baby’s gums with a damp cloth. Doing so prevents bacteria buildup (which can worsen discomfort) and gets your baby used to an oral care routine early on.

While teething can be a difficult and uncomfortable part of development, it’s temporary and can be made easier with the listed relief tips. The difficulty of teething varies from child to child, with some experiencing more discomfort than others. In any case, regular check-ins with your pediatric dentist are crucial during this stage.
